Travel
To stay up to date with the latest research, and teach at workshops or disseminate her research, Eca regularly travels for work. Meeting new people, sharing ideas, and seeing new places are valuable and fun aspects of being an academic. To enable this to happen there is funding to apply for, flights and accommodation to book, conference registrations to pay and talks or posters to prepare.
Eca is forever grateful for the support provided by M - the department secretary. M runs the show, booking requested travel and bringing the credit card when conference registrations are needed!
M also provides moral support when Eca starts questioning why instructions are in a foreign language, filled with acronyms and terminology she can't understand. As a foreigner from a different system, Eca struggles with tasks that should be easy and self-doubt sets in.
