Research summary
Rootstocks are an essential component for successful tree fruit production, yet the below ground root systems are little understood. My research will aim to identify the genetic basis of root system architecture in apple rootstocks and to associate root type with nutrient use efficiencies in this woody perennial species. This research could have significant potential impact for other high value perennial crops including cherry, pear and apricot.
My Background
Before starting the PhD, I completed a BSc in Biology, at the University of Jaén, Spain. Afterwards, in order to compliment my academic training I did an MSc in Biotechnology and Genetics at the University of Córdoba, Spain. In 2014, I had the opportunity to start working at NIAB EMR in Kent where I have had the opportunity to I participate in several research projects in a multidisciplinary team. Part of my work was focused on examining dwarfing in apple rootstocks. Then I developed my interest in rootstocks and root function and through my PhD I will aim to understand how root system architecture can be optimised for both anchorage and nutrient use efficiencies.
Country of birth: Spain
Hobbies: Anything that involves being in contact with nature such as hiking. I also love travelling, especially I like visiting small villages.
A weird fact: I love buying second hand board games, give them another chance although I rarely play. They end up being part of the decoration of my storeroom.
