Once upon a time there was an early career academic called Eca who had moved to the other side of the world in order to pursue her career. She gave up pension allocations while on fellowships and had visa costs and restrictions on allowable time outside the UK. Amidst the personal upheaval (including serious health challenges) she had submitted major grants to a key granting agency, received amazing reviews, cash support from industry and still been rejected. Even worse, the feedback from the agency directly contradicted the reviewer feedback. All these things made it hard to see a future at her UK institution.
